No cloud
Rules, history and records stay on this computer. There is no BioKids server, no account and no "anonymous usage statistics".
BioKids sends nothing about your family to any server: no telemetry, no account, no cloud. Every connection the computer makes is either its own updates or something you turned on yourself, and every one of them is listed on this page.
Rules, history and records stay on this computer. There is no BioKids server, no account and no "anonymous usage statistics".
Supervision is never hidden. The first start explains what the family can see, and when you watch the screen, the child sees it.
Every record has a lifetime: sites 30 days, requests 90 days, the audit log a year, daily minutes 400 days.
BioKids keeps only what it needs to enforce the rules and show you a summary. It all lives in one database on the computer, and records that expire are deleted by themselves.
| What is kept | For how long | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Names of sites opened | 30 days | Only the site's name (e.g. pbskids.org); never the page, a search or anything typed. |
| App use | 30 days | Which app was open, and for how long. |
| Use by the hour | 30 days | For the "At what time of day?" chart in Insights. |
| Daily minutes | 400 days | For the year-long map in History. |
| Requests | 90 days | The time, sites and apps the child asked for with "Ask a grown-up". |
| Audit log | 365 days | Every rule change, PIN attempt, time given, clock change, and every time live viewing started. It cannot be deleted from the panel. |
Never kept:
The only moment BioKids looks at a child's screen is when you press Watch live in the panel.
The child is always told about the supervision. It is one of BioKids' principles that no setting can change.
/var/lib/biokids/biokids.db, which only the administrator (root) can read; the children's accounts cannot reach it.This list is complete. A new connection must first be written into the project's security document (§4).

Telemetry, crash reports, version checks, usage statistics. Tailscale's own log upload is switched off (--no-logs-no-support). The blocklists ship inside the package and are never refreshed from outside. | |
Every download you start is checked against a pinned checksum (SHA-256); a file that does not match is not used.
BioKids is made for one curious 4–10-year-old alone at one computer. It does not stop:
Everything inside and outside its scope is in the threat model (§1). We would rather be honest about the limits than have a parent feel safer than they are: no filter catches everything, and none of this replaces talking with your child.
